New York-based photographer Simen Johan creates his out-of-this-world animal kingdom through the meticulous digital manipulation of photographs shot in different places all over the world. The result is “Until The Kingdom Comes“, a project that has recently been published into a limited edition book -only 750 copies. In this series, Johan portrays the natural world in a way that makes the viewer feel a certain familiarity but, at the same time, gets through an evident surrealistic atmosphere.

The Scandinavian photographer not only doesn’t follow most of his colleagues’ example of avoiding to admit the use of digital image manipulation tools, such as Photoshop, in order to improve or alter their images, but acknowledges it as a vital part of his work. “It’s rare that I see something that I want to simply photograph and not change at all” he says. “When constructing or manipulating images, I’m still limited by whatever raw material I’m able to capture on film, but I have more creative freedom to be imaginative”.
