Shauna Richardson is a UK-based creator who makes life-size animal sculptures using crochet.
The realistic artworks combine two creative practices, taxidermy with crochet, forming Richardson’s coined technique, crochetdermy. By using materials like coarse wools, mohair mixes, glass eyes and reproduced claws, the artist makes her creations look like dead stuffed animals from a distance. Her passion for crafting is beautifully attributed through the patters her use of crochet creates on the “skin” of her sculptures.
‘My work is entirely hands-on. I use the traditional craft of crochet in a not so traditional way and have developed my own freestyle technique which I use to respond to, and highlight, the anatomy of each piece as I go along. No two pieces are ever the same. It is meticulous work, typically using mohair yarn and a 3mm hook.’
