Li Hongbo’s Elastic Paper Sculptures

You may think these are just nicely detailed and delicate ceramic busts, but their beauty has to be unfolded (literally). Inspired by the traditional Chinese paper decorations, Beijing-based artist Li Hongbo creates flexible sculptures out of thousands of layers of glued thin paper.

Hongbo first builds the honeycomb-like structure, kept together by strategically-placed glue on each layer. He then carves it into a desired shape and reveals the surreal potential of the sculptures by gently pulling them up. Be sure to check out the video below to see them in action!
