French-born photographer Eolo Perfido sees clowns the way we all do. As our worst nightmare!
Clownville, is a photo series that depicts the most scary clowns, photographed in a grotesque and horrifying atmosphere. His inspiration comes from silent movies and actors like Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin, and the way they expressed their emotions due to their inability to speak.
Even though clowns were associated with comedy in the 18th century circuses, Perfido decided to portray them as creepy, horrifying creatures of entertainment. The root of the word is Scandinavian and it means “clumsy, boorish fellow.”
Eolo Perfido is now based in Italy, having worked for magazines like the Russian Vogue and NY Times. The make-up for this series was done by Valeria Orlando.
