See how the world looked 100+ years ago
For many people who love history and find allure in the previous eras of our world, few things can match the satisfaction and excitement one feels, when looking at old photographs. Cities that are incredibly busy in today’s world, seem more spacious and romantic back then. Dresses and frock-coats that were the norm 100 years ago. Historic buildings, roads and people that have either been destroyed, entirely altered or gone.
But when one thinks of old photographs, normally black-and-white photos come to mind. And while most photos were indeed black and white, that doesn’t mean all of them were. Enter, the brothers Lumière. August and Louis Lumière created the Aytochrome Lumière. Before them, photo colorization was usually done by a professional colorist who used various dyes and pigments. Their technique involved using the dyed grains of potato starch and light-sensitive emulsion. So they could create vivid photographs without the need for additional colorization. And while these kinds of photographs were both expensive and difficult to manufacture, they were very popular. And remained popular, up until the introduction of the revolutionizing Kodachrom by Kodak in 1935.
