Agape Charmani for Art-Sheep
Ivan Prieto is a Berlin-based artist who creates bizarre sculptures, experimenting with human anatomy and adding vivid, colorful details to figures that look sickened by their own existence. Discussing issues of beauty and queerness, Prieto gives his sculptures malfunctioning anatomical features as a punishment for something that they did. Their facial expressions are almost always neutral, as if these figures accept their fate and move on with the consequences of their actions.
It is strange how drawn the viewer feels towards these works. Being in a silent pain, with Prieto telling their stories through shape and color, the sculptures speak through their existence, with their expressive formations reminding us that they could be any of us.
