The Winners of the GDT Nature Photography of the Year 2020 Were Just Announced

It is important, these days, to try to entertain yourself and keep yourself sane at the same time. We cannot do many of the things we used to, in the past. Like travelling. Exploring other countries’ nature, flora and fauna is truly one of the most fulfilling things in the world, for travel lovers and adventurers. Though we cannot, at the moment travel to distant lands, we can awe at – quite possibly – the next best thing; nature and wildlife photographs, taken by extremely talented photographers. The GTD (aka the German Society for Nature Photography) has just announced the winners of their Nature Photographer of the Year 2020 contest. The photographs are truly majestic. Contestants competed in a total of 7 categories: Birds, Mammals, Other Animals, Plants and Fungi, Landscapes, Nature’s Studio, and a special category which was Water.

You can also read the statement the GDT made online as well as some words about the overall winner Peter Lindel. “Due to the coronavirus pandemic, voting was not carried out during the annual general meeting but was completed online for the first time ever in GDT’s history with great participation by its members. A total of 5,046 images were submitted. After a pre-jury procedure (Alexandra Wünsch, Torsten Bittner und Jon A. Juarez), it was the GDT members’ turn to make their choices from ten images in each of the seven categories. Compared to many international nature photography hotspots, this region [Dortmund] has little to offer. [But] Peter Lindel [invested] a lot of time and blood, sweat, and tears working on this project on his doorstep. In these times, as everyone is urged to stay home, the generally classic subject of a hare gains special significance. It is also a beautiful statement for long-term exploration of a single species and region.”
