Melissa Faithful for Art-Sheep
Toronto-based artist David Irvine is an artist who really knows how to transform boring old thrift-store paintings into pop sensations.
The artist adds characters and elements from movies, illustrations and TV shows into his Re-Directed Art -as he calls it. His bizarre paintings depict from Star Wars characters wondering inside yards to Godzilla attacking Venice.
Irvine runs an art store called Gnarled Branch via which sells his unique creations. His obsession with pop culture and its characters is obvious on his altered works. The artist chooses cheap paintings as his artistic field and illustrates them with surrealistic scenes taken from pop traditions.
Even though these images are a product of contradictory patterns, Irvine always makes sure to leave the original signature clear, creating funny connections between the background and the added characters.
