Tokyo Hotel Story is a project by photographer Nathalie Daoust. Well-known for exploring female sexuality, Daoust continued her investigation by spending several months in the Alpha In, one of the biggest S&M “love hotels” in Japan.
There she photographed 39 women in their private rooms, posing with their equipment and dressed in the regalia that define their trade. Leaving issues like certain taboos and gender stereotypes behind, Daoust creates fantasy worlds where her subjects are allowed to escape reality and experience their dreams or own realities.
Photographing on analogue film and hand printing her work, the photographer combines her sexual and bizarre theme with a dark aesthetic, and by manipulating the negatives Daoust creates the results she “saw” during the shooting.
