Craig Davies for Art-Sheep
German, Berlin-based Martin Eder is an artist who works as a painter, a photographer and a sculptor, constantly producing works of various and different forms.
What connects his many practices is the dark, strange aesthetic the artist creates his pieces with. From a kitsch painting to an installation, the notions of the mysterious and the perverse are extremely acute. Eder’s series of erotic paintings is a world of kittens, birds and naked young women. This surreal work displays girls in pornographic poses, while various kinds of animals are participating in their freakishly nightmarish wet dreams.
The artist uses bright and contrasted colors that highlight his scenes and the distortion in propositions, analogies and relationships depicted on the canvases. This series can remind one the technique and works of German Expressionist Otto Dix, although here instead of the characters’ features, the situations that they’re in are the ones that are tremendous and scary. This creepy world is clad with a dark aura that gives the viewer the impression that its residents are imprisoned in an endless queer continuity.
