Ecce Homo is a series by photographer Evelyn Bencicova. The title of this project is a popular Lating phrase meaning, “behold the man”, while according to the Bible, it was said by Pontius Pilate when he presented Jesus Christ to the hostile crowd.
The artist discusses the Biblical notions of this phrase through a set of mysterious images. Depicting faceless nude bodies inside empty spaces, Bencicova creates theatrical, almost spiritual settings. Posing in strange positions, the photographer explores the way something immaterial stands as the most important thing in someone’s life, while through her inactive, serene models she explores notions of death, existence and decay.
