“Begpacker”: Tourist who travels backpacker-style without sufficient funds but asks for donations, freebies, and handouts from locals. It is often done in countries where the average income is far lower than what he/she could earn working a minimum wage job at home.
We all love travelling. To exotic, faraway lands, especially. We plan for months or even years, trips like that. Dreaming about said trips, for months, or years. Saving money for months or even years. It seems though, that some travelers, just forgot about the last part. They are called “begpackers”, and the definition to the term, is given in the beginning of this article.
These “begpackers” are becoming quite annoying, especially in Asian countries. There, it is said, mostly the British, the Australians and the Russians beg in the street in order to travel. And in Bali, the locals got so frustrated with the increasing number of western begpackers, that immigration officers started escorting them to their embassies, in order to find a solution to this problem.
“We tend to report these cases to the relevant embassies so that they can oversee their citizens who are on holiday,” said an Indonesian immigration officer.
