“Birgit Deubner was born in Cologne (Germany), her father, a painter, introduced her to paint brushes, at age 3 she covered her whole body including hair in oil paint. Body as brush.. a conceptual artist was born. (She repeated this performance at age 4 with Nivea, Germany’s favorite very sticky, oily moisturizer). A radio program about Matisse sealed the decision to become an artist in order to never have to retire.” These are the amusing words that Birgit Deubner uses to introduce herself.
Her project Chorus / in vain I will away is a truly stunning work, in which she treats the human body in unconventional ways, stripping it of the privilege of identity. Her dark creations seem to reflect mystery, brutality and fear.
