I was born a bitch. I was born a painter. – Frida Kahlo

Frida Kahlo de Rivera is one of the most significant and famous painters of the 20th century.

Known for her many and interesting photographs, Frida created a myth around her name and her profession that occupies a serious chapter in the art history of the last century.

German-born French photographer and photojournalist Gisèle Freund spend a two-year time documenting Kahlo’s daily life with her husband, artist Diego Rivera. Freund captured the private moments of the lucrative painters in a series of beautiful and, until recently, unseen photographs. The series allows the public to see Frida Kahlo’s last years before her death in 1954.

Over than 100 rare black-and-white images are included in Frida Kahlo: The Gisèle Freund Photographs, a book that features the documentation of Kahlo’s intimate moments with her husband in their house while it also includes texts by Kahlo’s biographer Gérard de Cortanze and art historian Lorraine Audric, a commentary by the photographer about Frida Kahlo and a link to unreleased color footage of Diego Rivera working, shot by Freund.
