A rather unusual artifact was found in a dig in the Polish city of Gdańsk proving, in fact, that archaeology can get quite saucy, at times.
This dig of an ancient latrine revealed a faithful- at least by 18th century standards- replica of a penis, that is believed by archaeologists to have been accidentally dropped in the toilet by its user. According to experts, the late 1700s’ sex toy appears to be expensively-made, by high-quality leather and interesting details such as a wooden tip and a filling of bristles.
Claiming the fake phallus to be “an extraordinary find for people searching the history of erotica”, Marcin Tymiński at the Regional Office for the Protection of Monuments added that the, otherwise “preserved in excellent condition”, sex toy has been taken away for “maintenance”.
