For Artists Unframed: Snapshots from the Archives of American Art, curator Merry Foresta collected more than one hundred photographs of art icons with their families and friends, in casual moments.

These photographs present an unknown aspect of these artists’ lives and their characters, as they depict spontaneous and beautiful moments in their lives. From Frida Kahlo and Pablo Picasso to Andy Warhol and David Hockney, artists here are shown working, partying or even enjoying a day at the beach. Foresta shares her personal favorites, one of them being the one of Andy Warhol and his friends at Fire Island, while expresses that she was surprised by the photographic material of Jackson Pollock’s, whose family seems to have been obsessed with capturing every moment of his life.

Artists Unframed aims to bring out the humane side of these art stars, who are actually much more complex than we imagine them to be. Bringing us closer to the person and not the idea of the artist, these photos capture fun and intimate moments of the artists’ lives, as we’ve never seen them before.
