Agape Charmani for Art-Sheep

“Bonded” is a new series of works by Sarah Muirhead. The artist presents portraits of people, different and strange to each other, who share a common characteristic, the feeling of pain.

Whether they are bonded with ropes or worn out mentally, these people present their scars, that exist in both emotional and physical forms. And even though these wounds become better perceived when seen, the talented artist has managed to depict even the slightest detail of emotion of her characters, making their pain even more real for the viewer to identify with.

“I’m fascinated by the physicality and spirit of a body and it’s potential for pleasure, pain and expression. Idiosyncratic character is intrinsically important in my work but an anatomical, pulsing, critical view is also there. (…) I want the bodies I paint to be a strange mixture of lurid, glistening attraction and true empathic realism avoiding elegant cliches. They reflect private selves and acknowledge my inescapable role as a voyeur in observing and recreating them. A period of serious illness has detached my idea of personality from physicality – I want to paint the two back together again,” she writes on her website.
