The dead body of Aylan Kurdi, a child from a largely Kurdish-dominated region in northern Syria, washed ashore on a beach in the Turkish resort town of Bodrum last September. The story of the 3-year-old Syrian refugee shocked the world when a photo of Aylan became viral, and caused the outrage of the whole world.

Last week, Ai Weiwei recreated the tragic image, imitating the lifeless body of the Syrian toddler. The Chinese artist lay down on a pebbled beach with his eyes closed for India Today magazine. The shoot took place on the Greek island of Lesbos and will be featured on the next issue of the magazine along with the artist’s interview.
